James Andrew Bass
James "Jim" Andrew Bass, a resident of Santa Cruz, passed away on March 24, 2026. Jim was born on February 15, 1935 in San Francisco to Virginia Scott and Albert Bass. In 1953, he graduated from Lowell High School where he majored in mechanical drawing. Four years later, Jim married Kathleen "Dolly" Freeman in a courthouse wedding in San Francisco. Soon after, Jim and Dolly moved to Redwood City where he worked in construction and she worked as a homemaker, rearing their three children. Following two decades living in the Peninsula, Jim and Dolly moved to Santa Cruz. He and his wife became heavily involved in their new beachside community. Jim was a member of the local rotary club and a weekly participant in the Monterey Bay tennis scene where he won three USTA NorCal player of the year awards in men's doubles for his age group. After his wife's passing in 2013, his Santa Cruz neighbors and the Rio Del Mar tennis community helped fill the vacancy in his life by providing him with support and assistance. Jim is survived by his children; Mark (Sharon), Stacey and Khris (Ben); his sisters, Eydie Culver and Virginia Lee Dover; and his grandchildren, Amanda and Alex.
