      CHAPIN, S.C. - Jeanette Martin Bass, Ph.D., 75, of Chapin, wife of the late Frederick Alexander Bass, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997, in her home after a long illness.
      A resident of Chapin, S.C., she had been a former resident of Hayes. Dr. Bass graduated from Riverside School of Nursing and for a number of years worked in various capacities as a nurse. She returned to college in 1964, graduating from the College of William and Mary.
      She received a master's degree from Old Dominion University and a doctorate from the University of South Carolina. She taught English at Thomas Nelson Community College and at the University of Maryland in Germany as well as other sites. She was the author of a novel, "End of the Beginning," and several poems, and was listed in Who's Who of American Women.
      During her lifetime, Dr. Bass was active in various community organizations, including past president of the Hampton Junior Women's Club, the PTA and the Speakers Bureau.
      She was a committed Christian and former Sunday school teacher. She had been a member of Bethany Methodist Church and Union Baptist Church, both in Gloucester Point.
      She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rev. Cheryl B. Rhodes and retired Lt. Col. Robert Rhodes of Chapin; and the four grandchildren, Rob, Derick and Geoffrey, all of Columbia, S.C., and Heidi of Chapin, S.C.; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Virginia Mahler Weller of Virginia Beach and Rose Giersch of Gloucester Point; one brother, Lacy Martin of Gloucester; and a number of nieces and nephews.
      Graveside services will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, with the Rev. Cheryl Rhodes officiating.
      The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Dr. Jeanette Bass Scholarship Fund, Account No. 0000523083, c/o Newberry Federal Savings and Loan, 127 Amicks Ferry Road, Chapin, S.C., 29036.
      Dunbar Funeral Home in South Carolina was in charge of arrangements, and Lawrence B. Wood Funeral home is in charge of local arrangements.
