Gail G. Bassett
Gail Giles (Griggs) Bassett, 84, of Westbrook, CT, passed away on December 31, 2024. Born on October 19, 1940, in Brooklyn, NY, to Robert Griggs and Marguerite Turnbull, Gail grew up in Brooklyn and spent summers at West Beach. In 1953, Gail moved to Nutley, NJ, where she graduated from Nutley High School. Gail attended Gettysburg College then graduated from Boston University, where she joined Alpha Phi, and later earned Master's in Education from Central Connecticut State University.
Gail was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose greatest joy was her family. She and her loving husband of 63 years, Philip Bassett, married in October 1961, eventually settling in Westbrook in 1967. Gail was proud to have been a 1st grade teacher at McGuire Air Force Base and then Glenwood Elementary School before becoming a full-time mother. She later returned to work, becoming the Director of Christian Education at the Westbrook Congregational Church.
Gail was an active volunteer in her community. She was the first female member of the Westbrook Harbor Commission, Superintendent of Cypress Cemetery, President of the PTO, and held numerous positions at Westbrook Congregational Church. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and P.E.O. Sisterhood. Gail was a lifelong boater who enjoyed cooking, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Gail was predeceased by brother-in-law Robert Barrett, his wife Nile (Bassett) Barrett and her parents. She is survived by her husband Philip, son Wesley, daughter Brooke Hilyard, son-in-law Jay Hilyard, grandsons Owen and Drew Hilyard, nephew Morgan Barrett, niece Marlow Barrett Medeiros and their families.
Services will be held at Westbrook Congregational Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gail's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation (alz.org) or the Westbrook Congregational Church (westbrookcc.net).
