Paula Swain Bass
December 13, 1934 ? October 17, 2026
Paula Swain Bass, 91, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, October 17, 2026. She was
born on December 13, 1934 in Plymouth, NC to the late Paul and Vida Swain. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Standley Eugene Bass. Together they built a life in Nash County that she loved.
As the wife of a farmer, Paula was no stranger to hard work as she engaged in all aspects of
running the family farm. She often cooked meals daily for everyone who worked with them and
pitched in wherever she was needed. Whether it was barning tobacco or harvesting watermelons, Paula was always there to help. Her passion was vegetable gardening and you could usually find her picking, shelling or canning during the spring and summer months. She enjoyed working in her yard and tending to her flowers.
In all she did, it was evident that Paula had a servant?s heart and used her many talents to bless others. Cooking and sewing were just two of her gifts that she shared with family, friends and anyone who expressed a need. She found joy in caring and helping others and was never too busy to lend a hand. As a devoted member of Mount Zion Free Will Baptist Church, Paula
served her church in a variety of ways and lived out her faith for others to see. She was a member of the Women?s Auxiliary where she served as treasurer for a number of years and was often instrumental in helping with meals for families. She was kind and generous and a friend to many.
Paula will also be remembered for how well she loved her family. As a devoted wife, mother,
and grandmother, there was never a need that she did not strive to meet for her family. She
enjoyed working by their side or being at events to show her support. Left to cherish her memory are one son, Lance Bass and wife Courtney, one daughter Lori Mills and husband Timmy, grandchildren; Brandon Bass, Taylor, Trevor, Trey and Taytum Mills, great-grandchild; Harrison Mills, sisters Lorna Sheppard, Jane Everton, and Lois Smith, brothers Lee Tom, Ernest (Kay) and Michael Swain, sister-in-laws Lillian Ann Swain and Nan Bissette (Jerry), brother-in-law Ronald Bass (Martha), and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband she is preceded in death by her sisters Evelyn Gay and Sonya Hardison and brothers Walt, Eddie and J.D. Swain.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice of Wilson, her
special caretaker and friend JoAnne, her caretakers Jasmine, Lynn, and Charlene; for the
dedicated care, compassion and support shown to Paula and her family during her final days.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 24, 2026 from 6-8 pm at Cornerstone Funeral Home. The
funeral service will be Sunday, October 25, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Cornerstone Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery of Spring Hope. The family will receive friends and family all other times at the home of Paula Bass. Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to the Mount Zion Free Will Baptist Church Women?s Auxiliary or to a charity of your
choice in her memory.
