      James L. Bass

      James "Jim" L. Bass, age 78, of Smithton, MO, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Golden Age Living Center in Stover.

      He was born October 20, 1930, in Smithton, a son of James and Myrtle Bass. On March 23, 1957, at Lake Creek Methodist Church he was married to Dorothy Culp who survives of the home.

      He was raised and educated in Smithton. He and Dorothy made Smithton their lifelong home until their health declined. He was a member of Smithton United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed his work in the sporting goods department at Cash Hardware for 25 years buying, selling and trading until the store closed. He continued buying, selling and trading sporting goods as a hobby. He went to work at Bob's AF Super, and then worked as a courier at Third National Bank, retiring in 2003. He served as mayor of Smithton. He was a Boy Scout troop leader. He enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting, fishing and target practice

      Also surviving are a daughter Anissa Douglas and her husband, Jerry; four grandchildren, Ashley, Aaron, Chase and Jayden, all of Smithton. He was preceded in death by five brothers Kenneth Bass, William "Bill" Bass, James Earl "J.E." Bass, Chester Bass and Elmer Bass; and an infant daughter, Pamela Diane Bass.

      Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 2009 at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Downing officiating. Pallbearers will be Brendan Bass, Paul Dan Bass, Troy Bass, John Hernandez, Paul Culp, Jr., and Jason Culp. Burial will be in the Smithton Cemetery with full military honors conducted by VFW Post 2591.

      The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 4, from 7-8:30 p.m. at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel. Friends may call at the chapel after 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3.

      The family suggests memorial contributions to the Mid-Mo Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association or the Sedalia Animal Shelter in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be offered online at www.mclaughlinfuneralchapel.com.
