      North Carolina Hilliard Bassett died at her home on Main Street in Chattahoochee, Gadsden County, Florida on November 6, 2011. She was born to Victor Vance Hilliard and Minnie Missouri Holmes Hilliard on September 2, 1915, in Barineau Park, Escambia County, Florida. She spent her formative years in Hawthorne, Florida and graduated from Hawthorne High School. Following graduation she was employed as Talent Director for Wayne P. Sewell Productions for several years, during which she traveled throughout the Southeastern United States. She then studied Nursing for two years at the Florida State Hospital School of Nursing. After raising her children, she was employed as a seamstress at the FSH. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chattahoochee, where she was active in Sunday School, Sunbeams, and the Women's Mission Union. She was a substitute teacher and active member of the Chattachoochee High School P.T.A. In addition to these accomplishments and activities, she was a great friend. Carolina was a tenth generation descendent of John Hilliard, who was born in Gravesend, Kent, England in 1617 and immigrated to York County, Virginia, arriving on November 20, 1635 aboard the HMS Expedition. The family eventually settled in Warren County, North Carolina. Her ancestors fought in both the American Revolutionary and the Civil Wars. She was united in marriage to Fred Washington Bassett on May 25, 1941, in the parsonage of the First Methodist Church in Quincy, Florida. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2000. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by sisters, Carlee Ford Smith, Elizabeth Trammell, and Gertrude Drane; and brothers, Bernice HIlliard and James Hilliard. Carolina is survived by daughters Betty Sue Weeks of Sneads, Florida and Carol Carter of Tallahassee, Florida; and sons Bobby Hilliard Bassett (Barbara) of Pensacola, flolrida; John Ronald Bassett (Euglenia) of Tallahassee, Florida; and James McPherson Bassett (Keri) of Chattahoochee, Florida. She is also survived by her stepson F. Scott Bassett (Kathy) of Lakeland, Florida. She leaves ten grandchildren: Cynthis Cloud, Christy Davis, Jamie Paul, Liesje Kelly, Andrew Blount, Gary Bassett, Shelly Carter, Scott Bassett, Katie Moore, and Dashiell Bassett. She also leaves ten great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 9, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Chattahoochee, Florida. Interment will follow at Sunny Dell Cemetery, Gretna, Florida in the Bassett family plot. Lanier-Andler Funeral Home in Sneads, Fl. is in charge of arrangements. 850-593-9900 or 850-663-4343.
