Bass Romark Melvin Bass, 56, of 1006 Midland Terrace, was dead on arrival at Watts Hospital Thursday at 5:15 a.m. He was born and reared in Sampson County, the son of Reddin Bass and Lillie Evrette Bass. He was educated in the Sampson County schools. In 1924 he moved to Durham from Sampson County and had lived here since. He was last employed as a painter. For a number of years he had been a member of Cheek Heights Baptist Church. In 1930 he was married to Miss Brooksie Browning of Durham, who survives, as do three daughters, Mrs. B.G. Beck of Cary, Mrs. R.J. Maggengill Jr. of Burlington and Mrs. D.C. Hobbs of Durham; one son, Hugh M. Bass of Durham; two brothers, Ashford Bass and Fred Bass of Durham; seven sisters, Mrs. Lena Mincey, Mrs. Margie Poe, Mrs. Claudia McFarland, Mrs. Louvenia Smith, Mrs. Iona Perry, Mrs. Faye Maynor and Mrs. Mavis Braswell of Durham; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
