- WRITES OWN OBITUARY
Knowing that she was suffering from an incurable disease, Mrs. Senorah
Bassett, wife of Marshall Bassett, whose death occurred Friday morni
their home in Waldron, wrote her obituary and farewell message to her husband
and sons some time ago and had it put away by a friend, who was the only other
person to know of its existence. The document was found after her death. The
poem contained in the obituary which is printed below was also written by Mrs.
Bassett.
OBITUARY
(Written by My Own Hand)
Mrs. Senorah J. Israel Bassett was born August 31, 1858, daughter of
James N. and Catherine P. Israel, was married to Marshall Bassett, January 8,
1880. To us were born three sons, Herbert D., Ernest, and W.O. Bassett. Eight
living grandchildren, one, little Paul Jones Bassett, went to Heaven June 3,
1915. Four great-grandchildren, Robert Lee Bassett, Betty Jane Cosand, Paul E.
and Richard Bassett. Two brothers, Hovey L. Israel, living in Texas; William
A. Israel, living in Shelbyville. One half-uncle, David Armstrong, of
Shelbyville; three nieces, ten cousins.
I united with the Methodist church at the age of nine years. I was
taught Jesus at my mother's knee. Was converted when fourteen years old. Was
never so far away from God but I could hear the still small voice and feel the
weight of my angel mother's hand upon my head. I love my church. I love my
neighbors and friends. They may not have understood me, but Jesus knows. He
knows the things that do my way oppose. I love my home, I love my family. I
gave them to Jesus in their infancy and taught them of His great love. I have
a sacred place in my home where I meet my Savior. He comes and sips with me
and I with Him. I am trusting in His Word and through His grace and by His
hand He is leading and He has promised to be with me even to the end of the
way. Then 'tis only a step from me to Him. I will close my eyes here and open
them in Glory, where I shall see Him face to face and meet my loved ones
there. My friends and neighbors have all been so kind and good to me. I thank
them all and pray God's blessings to attend them. I am writing for the
summons, Weary child come home.
Dear loved ones 'round the table meet.
No more your Mother's face you'll greet;
The empty chair no more she'll fill,
For she's gone Home as 'twas God's will.
My dearest children true and tried
Through length of years of life besides,
I bid you thus a fond farewell
Too deep for words or tears to tell
Though I leave you never more
To greet you at the open door,
To grasp your hand, to see your smiles,
Has made life happier all the while.
And as I rest in yonder land
Still hidden from us by God's hand,
There I may know again in truth
The ones I loved on earth so dear.
Good-bye, one and all. I am trusting Jesus all the wa
