      Jewel Legon Bass

NORFOLK - Following a long illness, Mrs. Jewel Legon Bass was set free to enter the Father's Kingdom in Heaven in the early morning of Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009. Jewel was a longtime resident of Norfolk, having moved to Tidewater after marrying her late husband, Herbert A. Bass, in 1949. From that union, four children were born of which three remain.
Jewel was born May 9, 1927, in Nashville, Tenn., to the late Marshall E. and Tommie Legon. She was educated in the public schools of Nashville, and attended college at Tennessee State where she met her husband. She received the Lord as a young child and was a faithful member of the Sylvan Street Baptist Church in Nashville where she often played piano.
Upon moving to Norfolk, Jewel was a devoted wife to Herbert and mother to their four children. She was a member of the United Order of Tents, star of the East Tent No. 6. She willingly volunteered her time as both secretary and treasurer to the local chapter for more than 20 years.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Herbert; son, William; and brother, Marshall. Jewel is survived by her three daughters, Cheryl Bass-Fitzhugh, Janice Spruell and husband Alphonzo, all of Hampton, and Pamela Bass of Norfolk. She is also survived by her sister, Ann L. Coke and Rose L. Merritt; seven grandchildren, Juanita, Benita, Kellye, Gerard, William, Madeleine, and and Anthony; two great-granddaughters; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the caring staff of Heritage Hall Nursing Home for the tender care she received during her stay.
A funeral will be held Friday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. at Graves Funeral Home Chapel, 1631 Church St., Norfolk.
