Sophia Redwood Bass
Sophia Redwood Bass was born in Asheville, North Carolina, on October 16, 1923, to Robert Lee Redwood and Sophia Garlick Redwood. She attended St. Genevieve of the Pines and graduated from St. Mary's College in Raleigh, North Carolina. On November 16, 1946, she married Thomas Edward Bass III, a naval officer, and accompanied him on tours of duty in the United States and abroad. In 1975, after her husband's retirement from active duty naval service, the couple moved to the Northern Neck of Virginia where Admiral Bass became Executive Director of the Robert E. Lee Association's Stratford Hall, ancestral home of the Lees of Virginia. In 1998, Admiral and Mrs. Bass moved to the Charlottesville area.
Mrs. Bass was a life-long Episcopalian and was very active with the Episcopal Church Women, serving for many years on the Diocesan Board. She was an active member of Christ Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, and served on the Altar Guild.
She was a member of the Colonial Dames in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Jack Jouett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century, the Charlottesville Chapter of the Navy League, the Garden Club of the Northern Neck, the Rivanna Garden Club, and the Buck Mountain Garden Club.
She is survived by her husband, RADM Thomas E. Bass of Ruckersville, Virginia, three children, sons, Thomas E. Bass IV and wife, Kathie, of Jamestown, North Carolina, Robert R. Bass, MD, and his wife, Chris, of Annapolis, Maryland, and daughter Catherine Carter Bass of Ruckersville, Virginia. She is also survived by four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, her sister, Mrs. Edith Redwood Cook of Asheville, North Carolina, and seven nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Eleanor Redwood Penovich.
A funeral service and celebration of Sophia's life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 15, 2012, with a reception to follow at Christ Church, 120 West High Street, Charlottesville, Virginia. Private interment at Christ Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, and St. James Episcopal Church in Montross, Virginia, will be held at a later date.
