Mrs. Virginia Esther Sloson
Mechanicville – After more than 20 years as an instructor in the local high school, Mrs. Virginia Sloson, native of Orwell, Vt., died shortly after noon today at her home, 141 South Second Avenue. She was born in 1861.
To teach French and elocuation, Mrs. Sloson came to this city in September, 1915, and her record of service was continuous to late last June when she was stricken and oblited to place herself under a physician’s care.
Mrs. Sloson was unable to resume her duties last September and in October was granted a leave of absence for the first semester by the Board of Education. She was confident that she would return to her classes but her condition became gradually worse over the past six months.
Mrs. Sloson was Virginia Esther Bessette, one of nine children born to Margaret and Calice Bessette at Orwell. She was graduated from Castleton, Vt., Normal School and took extensive post graduate work at McGill University, Montreal. Her initial teaching assignment was in her native town. She later taught a number of years in Boston, Mass., before coming this city.
One of her chief diversions was travel, which took her several times to foreign lands. She was an active and devoted member of the local Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are one sister, Mr. Henry Hanrahan of this city; one brother, Albert Bessette of Merrimac, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
