June Trevilion Bassett (Picture included)

June T. Bassett, 87, was born on June 25, 1932, in Vicksburg, MS, and died peacefully on August 18 in Ann Arbor. Cause of death was respiratory failure owing to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). June graduated from Carr Central High School in Vicksburg, and attended Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas, for one year. She then went to work for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, where she eventually supervised the typists in the Station's Publications Section. In November 1962 she married John R. Bassett, a U. S. Forest Service research forester whom she had met in Vicksburg. They moved to Crossett, Arkansas, in 1962 and then to Ann Arbor in 1967, where John joined the faculty of the School of Natural Resources. In her teens and twenties, June was in demand to play the piano at church services, weddings, and other occasions. She loved to read books, especially mysteries. For several years she was active with the Friends of the Ann Arbor District Library. She excelled in cross-stitch needlework, much of which she gave away as gifts. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing bridge. As a faculty wife, she hosted many parties. She was a fine cook, and was especially known for her desserts. Her lemon bars were special! Her home in Ann Arbor was on a lot with generous room for flowering plants. She quickly learned how to select and care for roses, her favorite (and only) outdoor hobby. The onset and progression of macular degeneration robbed her of these pastimes. When she could no longer read, her husband downloaded books for her using the Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) website of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, a wonderful service provided by the Library of Congress. June's parents, Charles Trevilion and Hattie (Reaves) Trevilion predeceased her. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John, and two daughters, Amy Bassett and Jennifer Conn-Florka (Robert Florka); three grandchildren, Melanie (Corey) Zwegers, Brian Conn, and Molly Conn; and three great-grandchildren, William, Theo, and Phoebe Zwegers. Cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, September 21 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Nie Funeral Home (3767 W. Liberty Rd.) in Ann Arbor.
