Zelma R. Bessette
Zelma R. Bessette, 72, of Hall Manor, 70 Warwick Ave., who was active in a variety of organizations, died yesterday in Kent County Memorial Hospital, Warwick, after being stricken at home. She was the widow of Dr. Edgar L. Bessette, a dentist who died in July, 1975.
Mrs. Bessette was a graduate of Limestone College. Treasurer of the Hall Manor Socialites, she was a member of the Pawtuxet Senior Citizens and the Providence Figure Skating Club.
A communicant of St. Paul's Church, she was a past president of its Women's Club and Senior Citizens, and at one time program chairman of the latter. Also a past president of the Theta Chi Fraternity Mothers Club of URI, and the Rhode Island Dental Auxiliary, she was a past treasurer of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Children's Concert Council. At one time she served on the board of the URI Patrons Association..
She was born in Chimney Rock, N.C., a daughter of the late James and Lula (Goode) Whiteside. She had been an Edgewood resident for 50 years.
Mrs. Bessette leaves four sons, Edgar L. Bessette Jr. of Rochester, N.Y., Paul E. and Armand F. Bessette, both of Cranston, and A. Roland Bessette of Johnston; two daughters, Roberta J. Bessette of Fairfield, Conn., and Maureen C. Bessette of Foster City, Calif.; two brothers, James Whiteside of Greenville, S.C., and Robert Whiteside of Texas; a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Snyder of Sacramento, Calif., and eight grandchildren.
Her funeral will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. from Jones-Walton-Sheridan Home, 1895 Broad St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Paul's Church, St. Paul's Place. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery.
